Area codes refer to telephone numbering plans of allocating telephone number ranges to countries, areas, regions and exchanges and to non fixed telephones. From their time of origin, area codes have been assigned based on the length of time a rotary dial took to dial the area code. In those times there were the rotary dials with the numbers set in a circular fashion beginning with 1 and ending with 0. So densely populated regions were allotted with the area codes that could be dialed quickly from the rotary dial phone since the volume of calls made were much more. This system became unnecessary with the introduction of contemporary electromechanical switches.
There are different types of codes that have to be attached before the actual number so that the dialing process is systematic. These access codes are necessary only when dialing international and non-local domestic calls. The national access code is often quoted as if it were part of the telephone number. Country code is necessary only when dialing to phones in other countries. Area code in most cases is required only when the number is dialed from outside the code area, mobile phones and from within overlay plans.
They indicate the geographical areas within a country that are covered by a number of telephone exchanges. They are usually preceded in the dial string by either the national access code or the international access code and country code. Local number must always be dialed in its entirety. The first few digits in the local number typically indicate smaller geographical areas or individual telephone exchanges. In mobile networks they may indicate a network provider in case the area code doesn’t.
