Sex during menopause almost sounds like an oxymoron if you are to believe the media today, however this is simply not true. Although it does come with new hurdles, emotionally and physically, most women actually reported an increase in their libido. In fact the only women who noticed a decreased interest in sex were those who believed it was a normal part of the aging process. Being informed is a womens greatest strength when it comes to menopause so here are the most common symptoms that can stop even the healthiest libido in its tracks.

Hot Flashes and Night Sweats

Menopause is often characterized by hot flashes and night sweats so it is understandable why it is hard to get in the mood if you are burning up in bed. To relieve symptoms, there are a variety of estrogen supplements and natural remedies available. Recent studies have found that natural supplements focused around isoflavones, such as Promensil, are highly effective. There are more than 1,000 types of isoflavones, however only four have been shown to benefit women going through menopause: genistein, daidzein, formononetin and biochanin A. Soy, the most commonly used ingredient in natural supplements, only contains daidzein and genistein. Promensil, which focuses around red clover, contains all four isoflavones as well as ten to twenty times the quantity found in soy- the next richest source.

Delayed Arousal

As menopause begins women may start to notice that the spontaneous arousal that they experience in their twenties is just not there anymore. This does not mean that sex is no longer of interest, but it does require more stimulation physically and emotionally. Spend a little extra time stimulating your partner and your self before intercourse, the anticipation can make the act that much more exciting. And remember that intimacy is not just confined to the bedroom. Dinner, dancing and a walk by the water can be the fuel for that spark in the bedroom.

Lubrication

Without proper lubrication sex can be uncomfortable and even painful. During menopause women often find it difficult to produce their own lubrication, combined with thinning vaginal walls, it is no wonder why sex can fall by the wayside. Water-soluble lubricants, such as Astroglide and KY Jelly, can really make a difference and do not require a doctors prescription. Avoid non water-based lubricants because they can create the ideal breeding ground for bacterial growth. If you find that personal lubricants arent strong enough, topical estrogen creams or tablets have been very successful treating vaginal dryness without allowing hormones to entering the blood stream.

Menopause brings on many changes, however researchers at the New England Research Institute and University of Massachusetts Medical School have concluded that decreased estrogen levels are not a factor in a womans sex drive. It is important to understand that there are still obstacles but with proper treatment anyone can enjoy a healthy sex life. In terms of treatment there are many options available and women are beginning to demand options that are safe, effective and natural. Promensils extensive testing has proven that natural supplements can be just that. Menopause treatment should be about making women feel like women, naturally.
